Migrate docs from FileCabinet to TaxDome
Thomson Reuters has set FileCabinet CS to reach end of life at the end of 2027, so many firms are planning their move now. This article covers your options for getting documents out of FileCabinet CS and into TaxDome.
What comes over
With TaxDome’s assisted export :

Nothing is changed or removed in FileCabinet. The export only reads from your cabinet.
How it works
Step 1. Get your client list into TaxDome first
Your documents are matched to your existing TaxDome client accounts, so bring your client list over before the documents.

FileCabinet CS holds your documents, not your client list—most FileCabinet firms keep their client list in UltraTax CS or Practice CS. Assisted export
Our team handles this with you. TaxDome’s FileCabinet migration tool reads your cabinet directly and produces one clean, properly named folder per client on your computer—the whole cabinet in a single pass, not client by client.
Get started
This step is a paid service, often included free as part of onboarding—ask your onboarding manager or TaxDome representative for details, or tell us about your setup and request a migration .Two things we’ll confirm with you before we start:

Where your FileCabinet data lives—a local machine, your own server, or a hosted desktop such as Rightworks. All of these are supported.

Free disk space on the machine holding the export. Plan for noticeably more space than your FileCabinet data folder takes up today; we’ll help you size it.
Large cabinets can run for several hours and can be left running—the export picks up where it left off if it’s interrupted.
Self-service export
A TaxDome Community member built a free script that rebuilds your folder structure after a manual FileCabinet export.
Note
This method is done one client at a time—there’s no way to process the whole cabinet in a single pass—and it doesn’t reconstruct printed documents (returns, scans, letters) as PDFs or sort Accounting CS or CSA files into per-year folders. It’s built and shared by a Community member, not built or maintained by TaxDome.-
Export the client’s files from FileCabinet into a temporary folder, like C:\temp\TD Docs.

Download my.exe and run it in that folder—it reads the file names and recreates the folder structure automatically.

Create the matching TaxDome account and upload the reconstructed folder through the web portal , then repeat for the next client.
Step 3. Import your documents into TaxDome
Once your documents are on your computer as one folder per client, bring them in with the web migration tool: select the folder, review how the folders match your client accounts, and start the import. Your documents land organized by client, with your folder structure preserved. If you’ve already moved some documents over by hand, that’s fine—files that are already in TaxDome are skipped, so nothing is duplicated.

My FileCabinet drawers show internal codes instead of client names. Will my folders be a mess?
No. Folder names are read from FileCabinet’s own index, so each folder carries the proper client or company name.
Will my folder structure be kept?
Yes—your existing structure is recreated inside each client folder.
Will I lose the documents I printed into FileCabinet, like returns?
With assisted export, no—those are rebuilt as readable PDFs. Self-service export doesn’t reconstruct these as PDFs.
We’re hosted on Rightworks (or another hosted desktop). Can you still move us?
Yes. Hosted setups are supported—we’ll confirm the specifics with you before we start.
Do I have to do this client by client?
No, with assisted export—the whole cabinet is exported in one pass. Self-service export is done one client at a time.
We’ve already moved to TaxDome but left documents behind in FileCabinet. Can you still help?
Yes—we can bring them in after you’ve moved over.
Does importing my documents into TaxDome cost anything?
No. Bringing your exported documents into TaxDome with the web migration tool is always free.
Will my clients see these documents once they’re imported?
No. Imported documents land in a folder that’s hidden from clients by default—only your team can see them.
